About ANIC

The African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC) is the continent’s largest fund for supporting new media experimentation and digital news startups in everything from data driven journalism and investigative reporting, to newsroom management, audience engagement, digital convergence, and media business models.

Launched in 2012 as an annual event, ANIC is part of the African Media Initiative’s wider digital innovation programme that includes support for a pan-African network of HacksHackers chapters, data journalism bootcamps, newsroom-based pilot projects, and a fellowship programme that embeds coders in newsrooms to help rethink and reinvent the way that media work.

Our Mission

To support digital innovation and experimentation that seeks to improve the quality and impact of African journalism by using new digital tools and techniques for ‘making’ news, new ways for audiences to engage with news, and new models for media organisations to sustain themselves.
